Marlins Eyeing Cuban Slugger, Jose Abreu

One club official whose scouts were in the Dominican to watch the Cuban slugger says he hears “Abreu will get at least $50M. No posting fee. Puig and Cespedes have done it. Our people say he could be the real deal. I can see the Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers…any one of a number of teams paying that.”

Two general managers in to watch Abreu were Dan Jennings of the Marlins and Brian Sabean of the Giants. If the Marlins were to spend, it makes sense in Miami. Yasiel Puig was a drawing card when the Dodgers were in town, and they hadn’t had a potential Cuban star in the last decade until Jose Fernandez came up. “Two years from now, if they had Christian Yelich, Colin Moran, (Giancarlo) Stanton and Abreu at the front of their order,” says one club official, “with the young pitching they have, they could be serious contenders.”
