Peter Gammons: No progress on Headley extension; Padres to examine trade value

There have been reports that since the Padres’ talks with Chase Headley’s representative about an extension past 2014 haven’t gone anywhere that they may reconsider trading him this winter. But their original plans remain in place: the Pads will wait until at least June, evaluate his market, then either gauge his trading deadline value or go through to free agency, make the qualifying offer and see where it leads them.

If they were to trade him this winter, it would be after a season in which his homers dropped from 31 to 13, his RBIs 115 to 50, his OPS+ from 145 to 116, not the time to deal their all-star third baseman.
