The Future of Brian McCann

There are a lot of present and veteran Braves who think the club is making a serious mistake by cavalierly allowing Brian McCann go with free agency at the end of the season. One player says, “he is our glue guy,” and David Ross says, “only the people around the team understand what he means to that pitching staff. He’s a star player in the team concept.” McCann’s .884 OPS also leads the team.

My guess: He gets a QO from the team but goes to the American League where he can DH 50 games a year. If it weren’t for the awful Uggla contract, the Braves probably could afford him.

    Uggla…Ugh! Turrible!

Braves are a middle-of-the-road payroll team and have to make tough choices ; they don’t get to have everything they’d want or we’d want them to have. Heyward, Jupton, Medlen all hit free agency after 2015. Beachy and Freeman after 2016. The ridiculous Bupton contract runs through 2017. How many years will Mac be looking for? I’m betting not two or three. He’s been a great value to this point but now is where you have to overpay to have him on your roster and I don’t see how the Braves can do it, especially with a dirt cheap alternative in Gattis.
